Top Ten Tips For Engaged Learning Made Simple

*

1.) Easy Conversation Starters

- Use tactics such as simple questions like “How was your weekend?”, “How did you do on that test last week?”, or “what are you most looking forward to this weekend?”. Be interested in THEIR life!

*

2.) Students want to help create a lesson, let them co-create!

- Pick a student and have them work on a lesson plan with you or have a student pick another classmate and have them both work on a lesson plan together for the day!

*

3.) Students need to be constantly connected!

- They thrive on collaboration. Yes, use social media too! Take advantage of today’s technology and try to find ways to incorporate them in your lesson plans.

*

4.) Learning needs to be entertaining!

- People pay attention for 1/2 their age in minutes (Ex. If they are 20 years old, they will give you around 10 minutes of their full attention). Use humor in any of your lesson plans such as a funny video or a funny story!

*

5.) Change it up every 10 minutes!

- Remember! Your goal is to help them get information and retain it! How you do it needs to be Creative!

*

6.) YOU try to participate in the lesson Plan of the day!

- It will help students to FOCUS!

*

7.) Students are usually more focused in a WORKSHOP!

- Group settings and game playing is how they learn and feel that it is more fun!

*

8.) Interacting and Engagement Experiences!

- Students want to express themselves individually and when involved and engaging in activity they have opportunity to do just that!

*

9.) Embrace the new “Teaching” Methods!

- Integrate both classroom and social! We the teachers must change our methods and adapt and adjust to our students personalities

*

10.) Greet them enthusiastically!

- You WILL see a big difference!

Fashion Disasters

By Pat Kwas

***

What is fashion? What makes great style? It is personal; you want to present yourself in your own unique way. That is your fashion and style. But you need to be careful to avoid making fashion mistakes that can ruin your look.

***

1. Visible Bra Straps – Bras are undergarments, so keep your straps properly adjusted and don’t let them peek out on purpose or on accident.

*

2. Right Bra with White Shirt/Top – A common mistake that many women make is to wear a white bra under a white shirt or tee. A white bra will be clearly obvious under a white shirt. If you don’t want your bra to show, you should wear a color that matches your skin color. Choose a nude or tan color if you have lighter skin. If you have darker skin, a dark brown or black one works best.

*

3. Clothes That Don’t Fit Properly - Stop buying clothes according to the size you wish you were or hiding in over sized, baggy clothes. Both of these fashion disasters make you look larger than you really are. If you don’t have fit, you don’t have style. Don’t get hung up on sizes! Embrace your shape and wear clothing that accentuates your best features.

*

4. Beige – This color makes most people appear washed out. It brings out imperfections in your skin, like dark circles and redness. Brighter colors worn near the face will brighten your overall appearance.

*

5. Getting Stuck in a Style Rut - Sticking with classics has been conventional wisdom for ages, and for women with full lives and limited resources this is still a sure way to investment dressing. The problem is that as we grow older, we sometimes become a little too comfortable wearing our old standbys (or just doing “replenishment” shopping each season). Sometimes all it takes is tweaking the basics that you already own to look fabulous. Step out of your comfort zone and try a new style or a new color- your skin tone will appear brighter and your eye color will pop when you wear a color that makes you sparkle!

*

6. Don’t Indulge - That means don’t overdo sparkles, sequins or animal print. While it is fun to play with different colors, fabrics and styles at times- less is more. Wearing too much of a good thing can turn into a fashion disaster. If you are going to wear a top that has sequins on it, keep it simple everywhere else.

*

7. “Mom” Jeans - Jeans that sit way too high on the waist and taper in at the legs are extremely unflattering for your waist, hips, butt and legs because you lose proportion and balance. Even if you are an older woman, don’t be afraid to try a current style of jeans. I am not saying you have to get the very low rise distressed jean. Just look for a pair of dark wash jeans that sits below your belly button and are slightly flared or boot leg.

*

8. Stop Comparing Yourself to You 20 years ago - Our bodies change as we grow older, don’t waste your time pining for your “glory” years. Be the woman who people say looks better now than she ever did- 10, 20, even 30 years ago!

*

So if you found yourself cringing when reading this list of fashion disasters, take the time to make some needed changes. Remember- when you look good, you feel great!

Independent Salon Professionals are a growing community to our industry. We need support to maintain our professional image while operating as a sole entity. The day to day challenges of trying to juggle multiple projects, conflicting priorities and limited resources to try and uphold a business can be overwhelming. Many experience BURNOUT and lose passion as the daily demands deplete the personal energy needed to stay on the forefront of running the business effectively.

Lack of time is a big issue with independents; we are responsible for every aspect of the business and trying to stay focused in one area becomes a challenge. “Who motivates the motivator?” Trying to find ways to motivate yourself is exhausting. It requires constant drive and discipline to be an independent business practitioner. This business thrives on all areas of performance. We need to be prepared everyday mentally, physically and enthusiastically to embrace the details and responsibility of being an active independent cosmetologist. Encouragement and support from other independents will help inspire, educate and improve the overall professional state of mind; reminding them that they are not alone.

1. Low Productivity —

Freelancing requires you to have strong discipline + Self managements skills. It’s very easy to procrastinate.

*

2. Burn Out —

We’re so excited to grow + Succeed that we ignore REST/BALANCE

*

3. Isolation —

Very dangerous for independents. You need connection to resources! Interaction is crucial to surviving!

*

4. Low Self-Esteem —

Find your worth (Get paid for what you’re worth); set client boundaries (Fire a few).

*

We have 2 Primary commodities…

1. Time

2. Money!

Don’t let low self-esteem be the cause of your time or money.

*

5. Lack of Marketing —

Huge, Big, Gigantic, MISTAKE!!

*

Getting new clients is the essence of being a successful entrepreneur —

· Marketing is the CORE of your business!

· Without it you WILL FAIL!

*

6. Poor Communication -

Relationships are our business!

We need to sharpen our skills to be able to continue “WOW”ing + dazzling our clients!

· Be Interesting

· Be Newsworthy

· Be Interested- Rekindle your love for your clients!

· Don’t be DULL/BOARD/Take Classes to improve yourself!!

*

7. Inconsistent Effort —

A little EFFORT goes a long way.

· Dig Deeper

· Push Forward

· Be Persistent

We just have to be “BETTER”

**

9. Futuristic Prints – choose from oversize florals, colorful swirling graphics and mirror-like geometric prints to add an edge to your look.

Marketing yourself and your services is what makes the competitive difference. The clients that you see every day are your links to your future.

Our business is filled with opportunities to connect with people who can help us achieve our goals, and at the same time, we can help them to reach theirs. Networking provides you with the personal touch you need to create those relationships that are the fundamentals of being a smart business owner, no matter how big or small your establishment.

This week, we cover four nutritional pitfalls to avoid when eating at a fast-food restaurant.

*

*

1. Opt out of cheese and condiments such as mayonnaise and tartar sauce, which can add unnecessary (and unhealthy) types of fat. Use mustard or vinegar to add flavor as desired.

*

2. Avoid anything deep-fried. From chicken to potatoes to onions, deep-fried foods contain altered fats that are pro-inflammatory and detrimental to the body.

*

3. Skip the soda – it has no nutritional value and adds unnecessary calories to an already nutritionally challenged meal. Order plain water instead.

*

4. Avoid desserts. There are more than enough calories in fast food; there’s no need to add a sugary finale.

*

A flattering jacket is a core wardrobe item. Coats come in various styles, lengths and fabrics, just like women come in different shapes, sizes and personalities. Many women wear jackets that do nothing for their body type- think of the bulky, shapeless, oversized parka with a fur-trimmed hood, yikes!! Choosing the best coat for your figure should highlight your assets so that you look and feel beautiful.

*

1. A Full Figure - Choose a solid darker colored jacket (navy blue, chocolate brown, black, deep purple) that reaches to mid-thigh. This length flatters because is creates a clean, vertically-oriented silhouette without being so long that it overwhelms the rest of your outfit. To keep the lines long, opt for invisible pockets that blend right in to the contours of the jacket. Avoid large pockets with large buttons and all types of hoods, they add volume and bulk. Choose single-breasted button styles with oversized lapels to create a V-neckline. Choose a jacket with tailored seaming at the chest and waist to highlight those curves, rather than hide them.

2. Slim, Straight Figure - Add volume to your frame with a double-breasted jacket, a bold scarf and choose lighter colors (khaki, royal blue, cherry red). Belted trench coats help create an hourglass figure. Opt for slightly padded shoulders and a cinched waist to create curves.

3. Pear-Shaped Figure - If your curves are more substantial on the bottom half than on the top half of your frame, choose a straight-cut jacket that will create long vertical lines. Dark colors slim, so try black, navy, charcoal, burgundy or deep green. Opt for a coat that flares out slightly from the bottom. This extra ease will create a flattering jacket that skims your curves instead of clinging to them.

4. Short, Hourglass Figure - Choose close-fitted styles that follow the natural curves of your body. The jacket should be fitted in the waistline, so avoid straight-cut styles because they hide your shape rather than showing it off. Look for single-breasted styles, princess seaming, styles that form a V-neckline rather than a rounded or high neckline. Belted, knee-length trench coats are a good option.

*

Cost & Quality

Always check linings and fabric before purchasing to ensure proper fit and a long lasting coat. Occasionally, you’ll find a great coat for a bargain, but most of the time they are a bit pricey. If you can afford it, splurge because a well-fitted, classic coat won’t date. Take good care of your coat by following proper cleaning instructions, and choose a coat that suits you! Forget what is trending at the moment and flaunt your personal style.

So invest in a stylish coat that really flatters your body shape and make a serious style statement!
