1. Jog in one place for 3 minutes.

*
2. Do 25 jumping jacks.

When landing, bend your knees slightly to reduce the impact on knee joints.

*

3. Do 15 crunches.

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent. Place your hands behind your head with elbows pointing outwards. Support your neck with your hands. Keep your neck in a straight line with your spine. Flex your waist to raise the upper torso from the mat. Lower yourself until the back of your shoulders touch the mat.

Muscle worked: rectus abdominis

*

4. Do 10 Hip Bridges

*

Lie on your back. With your hands at a 90-degree angle to the floor, lift your body off the floor to form a straight line, a sort of a bridge, from the shoulders to the knee. The position should resemble a table. Your hands and legs are the legs of the table, and your upper body to your knees are the surface. Hold this position for two seconds. Squeeze your gluteus (butt muscles) and then lower yourself.

Muscles worked: Lower back, hamstrings and gluteus.

*

5. Do step-ups for 1 minute.

You will need a stepper for this or just the bottom step of the stairs. Step up with one foot, then the other. Step back down onto the floor.

Muscles worked: hamstrings, gluteus, quads.

*

6. Do 15 reverse crunches.

Lie on your back with your hands at your sides. Keep your knees bent. Bring your knees towards your head, till your hips come slightly off the floor. Hold this position for a second, and then lower your knees.

Muscles worked: lower abs and obliques

*
7. Mountain climbers: Sustain for 1 minute.

Get on your hands and knees and raise your knees like a starting block sprinter. Run in that position, supporting your upper body with the palms of your hands. Keep your back straight.

Muscles worked: triceps, deltoid muscle, gluteus, quads, hamstrings, calves.

*
8. Do 15 push-ups.

Muscles worked: triceps, deltoids, pectorals

*
9. Do squat thrusts for 1 minute.

Stand straight. Now, drop to a crouch position. Immediately thrust your legs out straight behind on your toes, in push-up position. Immediately jump to pull legs back to the chest, in crouching position, then stand up straight.

Muscles worked: arms, legs, chest, and lower back.

*
Cool down by walking around, until your heart rate starts getting back to normal, then stretch.
A 1-minute rest is needed in between exercises. Proper form is important. Do not hold your breath. Sip water during the workout. This workout targets the whole body, improves cardiovascular efficiency and tones and strengthens the body.

· Have you ever been in a salon on a Saturday? There is usually an electrifying energy in people that transpires in a salon on a Saturday. I am not sure why, but ask any cosmetologist and they will agree, that sometimes it is crazy.

Last week it was one of those Saturday’s. People in and out, the phone ringing off the wall, I was running behind all day and my next two clients came in earlier than their scheduled appointment. The day was getting the best of me… and my client, who was sitting waiting and witnessed this whole day transpire.

The next clients were two teenagers who just got back from their spring break so they were fired up to share with me and the rest of the salon all the fun they had. Both of them were talking at the same time and it was hard to hear anyone. You would be looking at the two of them like a ping pong ball to try and listen and grasp what they were saying. By the time my other client was finished with her shampoo, she had enough fun for one day. She walked over to my chair sat down, gave me a long pause and said “Let’s all take a moment of silence!” We both laughed!

Follow these 10 simple guidelines below to improve your workout and your attitude:

*

1. Looking great…

at the gym or on the walking trail may not be at the top of your priority list. But I believe like with most other events in your life, if you look good you feel better. Putting on a flattering workout outfit can actually motivate you to go to the gym or exercise outdoors. So what you wear can go a long way toward helping you stay motivated and confident – and can even improve your workout performance.

2. Workout clothes serve both a practical and a psychological purpose.

On a practical level, you need workout clothes that are not too constricting so you can move freely and clothes made from breathable fabrics. Psychologically, you need special workout gear to convince yourself it is time to work out.

3. Put function first.

Of course, looking great isn’t the only consideration when choosing a workout outfit. Your best bet is to choose clothes that stretch and bend with you. Comfort is key, too. Look for clothing that moves moisture away from the body as quickly as possible, Dri-fit is a good option. A 100% cotton T-shirt will get wet very quickly and will stay wet. As a result, you will be uncomfortable and may be tempted to cut your workout short. Also, don’t overdress, it is difficult to work out vigorously if you are overheated. By “not overdressing”, I don’t mean show lots of cleavage. You are exercising, not clubbing!

4. Wear clothes that fit.

The first step in improving your workout look is to assess your workout wardrobe and keep only the clothes that fit you. Oversized T-shirts and baggy, light gray stretched out pants will only make you look bigger and sloppier. This may affect your workout morale. Semi-fitted garments that follow the shape of your body without clinging creates the most flattering silhouette.

5. Undergarments.

You should wear a bra that offers more support than an ordinary bra. Your sports bra should be made out of material that is both breathable and durable. Unsupported breasts during workouts are distracting and also decrease elasticity of your breast tissue which leads to a sagging bustline, yikes!

6. Top choices.

Women:

A slim-fitting tee or tank that covers just half of your butt is a good option. Darker hues are more slimming and reduce the appearance of belly fat and muffin tops. Choose jewel tones – sapphire blue, deep teal, amethyst purple or hunter green. Tops with small geometric patterns also help disguise bumps and rolls. Create the illusion of curves with tops that have ruching or curved vertical lines along the sides.

Men:

Choose a Dri-fit short sleeved tee (untucked please) with longer shorts or long pants in dark colors.

7. Black is best below the belt.

The best shades are dark, so opt for pants/capris in black, navy and deep gray. Workout pants that feature boot-cut legs or tight-leg capris that flair at the calf are the most slimming and elongate the leg.

8. The right socks.

Ideal workout socks should keep your feet dry and prevent blisters. Choose low cut (just below ankle length) socks that provide cushion in the heel and toe. Best material option is a wicking material with added nylon or lycra spandex for stretch.

9. The right shoes.

Most important of all, make sure you are wearing a good pair of workout shoes. Go for quality. They need to be supportive and specific to the activity you plan to do.

10. Affordable workout wear.

You can find quality workout clothes at a great price. Try TJ Maxx and Marshalls; they have name brand apparel (Nike, Adidas, Reebok) at a fraction of the original price.
The right workout clothes can improve your performance and confidence. It is more than just looking good – it is about feeling comfortable and getting the most from your workout. Are you dressing for exercise success?

More and more people of all ages are taking a second look at our industry and thinking of all the opportunities that are offered in the wonderful world of cosmetology. They see how this business allows for flexibility, financial independence, creativity, happiness, and career security. They are opening their eyes to the endless choices in hair, skin, and nails. It is unbelievable what you can do today within this business from styling hair, to owning your own salon/spa, to becoming a traveling platform artist, or even working with TV and Motion pictures…the list goes on and on!

I have personally explored many aspects of our field and continue to find more areas I would like to experience. This is the type of industry that has real growth potential. The beauty industry will never die.
Studies have found that these foods help curb cravings, fight certain food addictions, boost metabolism and burn fat. And you actually get to chew and savor these slimming sensations.

1. Eggs

Averaging 6 grams of protein per egg and only 4-5 grams of fat and 78 calories, eggs have been superstars in many dieting studies. One study found that obese women who ate 2 scrambled eggs for breakfast accompanied by toast ate less in the next 36 hours than those who ate a bagel of the same calories. 36 hours is a LONG time to control your cravings—wouldn’t it be nice to have your food do it for you?

2. Beans

Keeping food in your stomach longer is the key here. I know, that sounds like bloat waiting to happen, but actually slower-digesting foods will lead to a tighter tummy in the long run. Beans contain a digestive hormone called cholecystokinin, which is known as an appetite suppressant. One study found that men who ate beans had cholecystokinin levels twice as high as those who ate a low-fiber meal. Beans can also stabilize your blood sugar, minimizing those sneaky snack attacks.

3. Salad

Everyone enjoys the process of eating. Cutting up your food, creating that perfect bite and savoring the flavor is most of the fun. That could be why one study found that women who ate a large salad before a meal consumed 12% less pasta than the women who just dived into the carb-heavy plate. Just the sheer volume and effort of eating the salad made the women feel full.

4. Apples

I believe the saying is “an apple a day” but change that to 3 apples a day if you’re trying to lose weight. With 3 grams of fiber per medium-sized apples, and the blood-sugar stabilizer pectin, apples can greatly curb inter-meal cravings. In one study, women who ate just 3 small pears or apples a day lost more weight than women on the same diet who did not.

5. Lean Beef

Muscle loss is a big problem for dieters. Fight this unwanted side effect with 9 to 10 ounces of beef a day. The amino acid leucine—found in lean meats and fish—helps you lose more weight and fat without losing muscle.

6. Green Tea

This could be why the Japanese don’t struggle with obesity nearly as much as Americans—they consume the stuff with almost every meal. The antioxidant called catechins helps speed up metabolism and burn fat.

7. Olive Oil… for Breakfast?

Mixed with cereal, it sounds a little funky, I know. But one study found that women who ate muesli cereal with oil-laced skim milk benefited with a boosted metabolism. Not to worry, the stuff is just as great on salads and grilled vegetables, too.

8. Grapefruit

Drop 3 pounds in 12 weeks! No, this isn’t an infomercial. This is what 91 obese people did in a study observing the benefits of eating half a grapefruit before each meal. Three glasses of the juice per day will result in the same weight loss.

9. Vinegar

Not just for salad dressings, this tangy stuff contains natural acids and enzymes that act as an appetite suppressant and boost your metabolism. Research has also found a link between vinegar and insulin response, showing vinegar’s power to slow down blood sugar rise after a meal, keeping you full longer.

10. Cinnamon

You may associate it with unhealthy foods like holiday cookies, but cinnamon has actually been found to help fight diabetes by increasing your body’s insulin response. One study observed the affect of two teaspoons a day of cinnamon on the blood sugar of type 2 diabetics. Participants experienced lower blood sugar and increased insulin production.

As a society, I think we often misunderstand the word success…

*

Our society celebrates those who obtain fame, wealth, power and celebrity, no matter the means—ethical or not—and we call them successful. Success is often equated to an achieved status, rather than to a measure of value or contribution.

We are taught early in life to strive for success, to achieve the status—win the trophy, get the notable degree, land the big position, win the impressive title, acquire the bigger house, bring back the enviable vacation photos and collect the cars, boats, jewels and big bank account. And when we are waving from the mountaintop, having finally achieved these trappings of “success,” we often feel a stark emptiness inside.

*

What’s wrong?

We might have acquired everything we ever wanted, except the one thing that really matters—significance. We want to know that our lives meant something, that we’ve had a positive impact on the lives of others. And only significance provides that; success by itself cannot.

The interesting thing is you can be successful and not significant, but you cannot be significant without being successful. We see success as more than rank, fame, fortune and material goods. A successful person, by our definition, is one who has achieved five pillars of excellence: business, well-being, relationships, wealth and contribution. We call this “whole-life success,” and one who has achieved it has attained a life of significance.

If you are still perplexed by the difference between success (society’s definition) and significance, think of significance as being those things said about you in your eulogy. It won’t be the initials after your name, the number of houses you collected or your company’s balance sheet that will be lauded. Your life—your legacy—will be defined by the positive and lasting impact you had on people, whether they’re your friends and family, your neighbors, your countrymen or possibly even humankind.

*

What does that look like?

One such example is the amazing Dr. Mehmet Oz. He has not only achieved enormous business and financial success by anyone’s standards, but his pursuits are those that make a significant difference in the lives of millions. All the while he still maintains excellence in his personal relationships and, no doubt, well-being. Dr. Oz is certainly a cover boy for living a life of significance.

How about you? Are you living your life in pursuit of success or significance?

Success by itself is empty. Only a life in pursuit of significance can grant you both. I want this month’s issue to challenge you to re-evaluate your goals and assess how you are focusing your ambition, time, energy and unique talent. Maybe you will find you have been chasing the wrong brass ring. Maybe you will become inspired to use your gifts of greatness in a way that not only brings you great personal abundance, but also greatly rewards those who get the privilege of being served by you.

Now that you know our definition, I can say, I wish you great SUCCESS!

Re-posted By Success Magazine

*

A New Shear Moment!

“The Client Challenge!”

If you think after 30 years behind the chair you know how to do just about anything….

THINK AGAIN!

Last week my new little 7 year old African American nephew came over for a visit. He watched me cut and color his grandmothers hair and was wanting some attention so he asked me if I would cut his hair.

“Sure, I said, let me grab my special cape.”

The excited boy ran happily to the salon chair, jumped right up and said ‘ “Can you line me up?”

Puzzled, as what he meant by line him up, I asked’ What do you mean?

You know… line me up!

I said “I’ll try, but I never lined any boy up.”

‘It’s easy, just do it.

So I tried to line the boy up and when finished his face went from a happy faced kid to a deflated frown.

I don’t think I lined him up right!
