10 Tips to Hide a Bulging Stomach

*

The dreaded bulging tummy and love handles are very common with women of all ages. Where fat is stored is dependent on hormones, hereditary factors and age. Wearing shapewear helps to flatten out our bodily lumps and bumps, but shapewear is also hot and uncomfortable to wear every day.  Your alternative is to dress in ways that camouflage the “extra bits” around your middle. So, while you’re doing your best to reduce this area and tone your midsection (shout out to Michele T!!), here are 10 tips to create an optically flatter tummy.
*

1.  Wear the Right Size. Make sure the clothes you buy fit you well.  Tent-like clothing will only make you appear bigger than you really are.  Opt for items that hint at your feminine curves.

*

2.  Don’t Tuck Your Tops In. Tops that stop in the middle of your tush help visually lengthen your waist and delicately hide your stomach.

*

3.  Look for Banded, Wrap & Empire Waist Tops. Banded tops are loose-fitting around your stomach and have a tight band that visually cuts your butt in half creating a blousy effect that is still figure flattering but roomy enough to cover your midsection.  Wrap tops create a waistline while showing off your beautiful neck and bust.  Empire waist tops nip right under your bust and go straight down thus camouflaging your middle.

*

4. Go For Fitted Jackets. A fitted jacket creates a flattering hourglass shape.  Avoid covering up yourself in a bulky jacket that will make you appear bigger.

*

5. Choose Fabric Wisely. Avoid lightweight knits, lycra and other stretch fabrics that highlight and emphasize rolls or bulges.  Opt for woven cotton and rayon blends that skim the body rather than cling to it.

*

6. Experiment with Small Patterns. Wearing small geometrics or florals keeps the eye moving and helps disguise bumps and rolls.

*

7. Choose Color Carefully. Darker hues are more slimming and reduce the appearance of belly fat and muffin tops.  Choose deep jewel tones – sapphire blue, chocolate brown, deep teal, amethyst purple, burgundy, hunter green and dark gray.

*

8. Wear Slightly Higher Rise Pants/Jeans. This is probably one of the best ways to feel girdled in.  The idea is to wear tops over your compressed tummy.

*

9. Wear a Camisole. This offers a similar effect to shapewear with ten times the comfort.

*

10. Select Ruched Tops. The effect of the folds is forgiving.
