8 Rules of Smart Shopping From Our Fashion Consultant Pat Kwas!

**

Before you attempt shopping for clothes, plan a day to go through your closet and edit.  Clean out what isold, dated or does not fit anymore.  As you go through your wardrobe, think about what you would like to add for a fresh update.  Look at store ads/catalogs for the best ideas and examples of what is new and how to incorporate these styles into what you already own.  Be honest and selective about those trends that are right for you. Here are 8 shopping rules that will help you choose clothing items that will be real bargains and will make you look and feel great:

**

  • 1. Know exactly what you need. Take inventory of your clothing and write a list of items that will expand your wardrobe – a burgundy top that you can wear with five other items in your closet, for example.

    *
  • 2. Never buy anything that you don’t absolutely love. I mean it; just don’t do it.  Never buy clothing that doesn’t fit right or doesn’t feel comfortable on.

    *
  • 3. Buy only what you need. If you have three gray sweaters/tops that are in good condition and have the same cut/style, you don’t need another one.

    *
  • 4. Shop for fabrics that you can wear year round. Lightweight knits and stretch fabrics are good options.

    *
  • 5. If you are working with a budget (and who isn’t?) – Stay away from that great plaid, flannel or embellished purse if most of your wardrobe is patterned and none of the colors in the purse match the clothing you already have.

    *
  • 6. Choose colorful, expressive tops. They send a fashionable message, enhance your skin tone and complement your eyes.

    *
  • 7. Don’t be seduced by a low price. No matter how expensive it was, if it doesn’t fit – don’t buy it.  You might find the best looking designer jacket at a low, low price – but if it is the wrong color or it doesn’t suit your body type, you will not likely wear it.

    *
  • 8. Shop prepared. If you are shopping to find a top to match a certain pair of pants, wear the pants shopping.  When considering a new purchase, always ask yourself these questions:

  • Will I wear it?

  • How many ways can I wear it?

  • What do I own that goes with it?

  • Will I get my money’s worth?
